The above is a gorgeous living Wych Elm tree, a rareity
in Ireland at present due to "Dutch Elm" disease. Fortunately
our last few elm trees could be saved if we treated them with TLC
and pruned them back when affected. An Elm tree can still be saved
even if it is up to 25% affected. The Canadians still have over
50 million mature Elms by using a widespread pruning programme over
the years. You can imagine the value of this crop to the economy
when you consider that each mature tree is valued at over 5000 dollars.
So lets be a bit sensitive and caring towards a species in great
need. You're mighty lucky if you've got an Elm on your land, so
notice it and take good care of it and you'll probably find yourself
getting hooked on Elms.
