Sound Proofing:
We at Energybuild choose an acoustic foam, placed under a timber floor, to help soundproofing between two floors. We used a 3mm x 50mm one side self adhesive tape that came in roll lengths of 30m and cost as little as 16 Euro per roll. The tape was designed to be placed conveniently with ease along rafters before the floor is laid. It is important that the insulation be used under all stud walls also to eliminate noise properly.

We found that this foam worked extremely well to reduce noise between floors and it was relatively inexpensive to do it. The noise would have been further reduced had we used the same foam compound which is available in 5mm format and comes in 1m X 100m rolls. However it must be noted that the cost differences between the two types would be significant. Our advise would be that if money is scarce it is still well worth opting for the low cost 3mm strip version as the difference it makes well outweighs the cost involved. However, there are many acoustic foams available so make sure you look at the relevant performance statistics of each (rather than the price) before you make your purchase.
